Ready to Regain Control: Alcohol & Substance Use Treatment

Deciding to address drinking or substance use is the hard part — from there, structured outpatient treatment can carry real weight. Allen Psychiatry offers Joint Commission-accredited outpatient programs, therapy, and psychiatric care for substance use and the conditions that often travel with it.

What Is Alcohol & Substance Use?

Substance use becomes a disorder when alcohol or drugs start making decisions for you — using more or longer than intended, failed attempts to cut back, and continued use despite real costs to health, work, or relationships. It frequently travels with depression, anxiety, or trauma, and treating them together works better than treating either alone. Our outpatient programs treat adults without requiring an inpatient stay. We do not provide medical detoxification — if stopping use could cause dangerous withdrawal, we will help you coordinate medically supervised care first, then continue treatment with us.

Signs it may be time to talk to someone

Drinking or using more, or more often, than you intended

Wanting to cut back and not managing to

Needing more to get the same effect

Spending significant time using or recovering from use

Falling behind at work or home because of use

Friends or family expressing concern

Using to cope with anxiety, low mood, or sleep

You do not have to hit a dramatic bottom to deserve help. "I don’t like where this is heading" is reason enough for a confidential conversation.

How We Treat Alcohol & Substance Use, All in One Place

Allen Psychiatry provides every level of care on one campus, so your treatment plan can adapt — up or down — without changing practices.

1

Structured day programs, accredited for substance use care

Our partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs are Joint Commission-accredited for adult substance use disorder services. Group and individual treatment runs multiple days per week on our Allen campus — enough structure to change patterns, without an inpatient stay, and with a built-in step-down path as you stabilize.

Therapy: the work underneath the substance

Individual and group therapy address what drives use — stress, trauma, relationships, habit loops — and build the skills that make change stick. Our licensed therapists treat substance use without judgment; the goal is your goals, whether that is stopping entirely or regaining control.

Psychiatric care for what travels with it

Depression, anxiety, ADHD, and trauma symptoms often sit underneath substance use — and untreated, they pull people back. Our psychiatric providers evaluate and treat these co-occurring conditions alongside your recovery work, with medication options considered carefully and prescribed under our safe-prescribing policies.

Alcohol & Substance Use FAQs

Straight answers to the questions patients actually ask

No. You start where you are. Treatment begins with an honest evaluation of your use and your goals — and if stopping abruptly could be medically risky (as it can be with heavy alcohol or certain sedative use), we will help arrange medically supervised care for that step first. What matters is starting the conversation.

No. Allen Psychiatry provides outpatient care: therapy, psychiatric treatment, and Joint Commission-accredited PHP/IOP day programs. You live at home throughout. If detox or residential treatment is what your situation needs first, we will say so plainly and help you coordinate it — and we can be the step-down plan afterward.

Yes. Substance use treatment is protected health information under HIPAA and additional federal confidentiality rules. Nothing is shared with employers or family members without your written consent, outside the narrow exceptions that apply to all healthcare.

That is the norm, not the exception — and it is exactly why treatment at a full psychiatric practice helps. Your care plan can address the substance use and the co-occurring condition together, with the therapy, medication management, and program teams working from one chart.
